The Approach and Inspiration
The residents, however, had a much broader and more varied taste. The spaces were designed to give art a central place and the right sense of proportion.
The project took about two years to complete. The work involved both the main house and an annex, which included, among other things, an office and a guest room.
My specific expertise lay in upholstery. The client has an excellent sense of style and handled much of the carpentry work themselves, which was both designed and executed by them. I assisted the client in finding materials that could not be found elsewhere and that also had to be of very high quality.
The use of colour is unusual by Dutch standards, but the chosen tones create more warmth and atmosphere and are considered very contemporary for 2025.
Challenges in Execution and Custom Work
This project presented exceptional challenges in the field of craftsmanship and detailing:
- Acoustic Panels: In the guest room located in the annex, the slanted ceilings were covered with fabric. To achieve this, panels were first made, upholstered, and then installed with millimetre precision against the ceiling. This solution improved acoustics and added atmosphere.
- Pattern Matching: When using, for example, Roman blinds with a pattern, the pattern had to align perfectly without shifting. This required extremely precise work both in the studio and on-site.
- Roman Blinds with Curved Shapes: For windows with curved forms, special Roman blinds had to be made to match the same curvature. This required moulds and was a significant challenge in custom craftsmanship.
Interior Details
The home is filled with precious, personal objects, often souvenirs from travels. To display these, for example, a large wall cabinet was created that extends up to the ceiling.
Other striking features include:
- The distinctive floor
- Steel doors combined with stained glass
- A bar/cocktail corner with curved fronts
- A walk-in wardrobe featuring classic patterned wallpaper that continues seamlessly into the cabinets
The end result is an interior built with immense care and meticulous attention to detail, where time was taken to ensure that every element was executed using the proper method.ant heeft een uitstekende smaak en heeft veel van het oerwerk, zoals het timmerwerk, zelf ontworpen en uitgevoerd, waarbij ik op detailniveau advies leverde. Ik hielp de klant met het vinden van materialen die zij elders niet kon vinden en die tevens van zeer hoge kwaliteit moesten zijn.
